With the Switch, Nintendo could make controllers great again

Whether it wants to is another matter.

There was no more exciting time to be a peripheral fan than 1999. For me, someone who loved the custom controls of the arcades, the Dreamcast was a fantasy. Its Visual Memory Unit (VMU) was a memory card with a screen that slotted into the controller -- and a micro-console in its own right. Games like Power Stone and Seaman let you load mini-games onto the VMU to play on the go, but more interesting was its dual-screen potential.
The VMU could display information, like your health in Resident Evil or plays in NFL 2K, right on your controller. These features were ahead of their time -- it wasn't until the Wii U GamePad came along that we saw a company go all in on dual-screen gaming. (The DS and its successors don't really perform the same task.) But the VMU was only the beginning of Sega's plan to expand the Dreamcast.

There was the Dreamcast Gun, a wired light gun that let you slide a VMU or Jump Pack (for rumble support) into the top. There was the microphone attachment that slotted in underneath the VMU in your controller, to let you talk to the weird fish-with-a-face virtual pet in Seaman.
Then there were the standalone peripherals. Who can forget the Sega Fishing Controller, which, as well as making Sega Bass Fishing incredible, also acted as a Wii-like motion controller in Virtua Tennis and Soul Calibur? Not to mention Typing of the Dead's keyboard, Samba De Amigo's maracas and Virtual On's twin sticks.
For context, the Dreamcast was on sale for just a year and a half in the West, and less than a year longer in the rest of the world. The number of accessories, the number of innovative ideas realized in that time, is just ridiculous.

With Sega's hardware days long behind it, Nintendo took up some of the slack. The Wii had add-ons for the Wiimote, including an analog nunchuck, a MotionPlus sensor pack and a "Classic Controller." There were also peripherals that integrated a Wiimote slot into their design -- namely a steering wheel and a gun -- as well the standalone Balance Board for Wii Fit. Oh, and somewhat serendipitously, there was a maracas shell for the Wiimote to play Samba de Amigo.
That innovation in peripherals all but died with the Wii U, though. The GamePad was certainly innovative in itself, but its all-in-one nature killed any chance for peripherals that weren't Amiibos. But there's a chance that peripherals could return in a big way with Nintendo's latest console, the Switch. A portable tablet with slide-on "Joy-Con" controllers, it takes the modular spirit of the VMU and applies it to the system as a whole. And a Switch concept by one artist, posted on Twitter and highlighted byPolygon, truly impresses me.

Ryan Salamanda imagines a world of add-ons that slide onto the right side of the main tablet to "augment" the controls. There's a Yo-kai Watchattachment complete with a spinning disc and light-up button. There's aPokemon Snap add-on with zoom dial and shutter key. There's even one with a fishing reel, as well as an attachment that mimics a GameCube controller. Salamanda's vision of what was then known as the "NX" was that, for certain games, you'd be able to buy the game packaged with a custom controller.
It's a great idea. The Dreamcast brought the magic of arcades into a 15-year-old me's bedroom. The Switch detailed by Salamanda would let me bring that excitement with me wherever I went. Would I feel stupid frantically spinning a wheel on a bus? Sure. But I want it so bad, nonetheless.
I've been arguing on and off with my colleague Nick Summers all morning about whether this is a good idea. His point is that peripherals are great because they look and feel like a complete object. "Even the craziest of Joy-Cons can't hide the fact you're holding a seven-inch screen," he says. That's valid, but I feel like the need to make that complete object has stopped many companies from doing so. By producing small, focused add-ons, perhaps based around a reference design, Nintendo and its partners could make these peripherals happen for a much lower cost than they would producing one-off, standalone accessories. And if that's what it takes for me to return, after 15 bass-less years, to that feeling of reeling in a giant fish, it'll all be worth it.

Nintendo Switch won't play Wii U discs and 3DS cartridges

Whether it has digital backwards compatibility is still up in the air.

Nintendo might have crushed some fans' dreams with its Famitsu interview. The company told the popular Japanese gaming magazine that its upcoming hybrid console won't be able to play Wii U discs or 3DS cartridges. It's unclear if the Switch won't be able to run digital games either, but if you were hoping to play your favorite 3DS titles on a 50-inch screen just for the heck of it, you may want to temper your expectations.
The gaming titan also clarified that the Switch is a brand new platform and not a direct successor to either the Wii U or the 3DS. According to a Reddit thread, someone asked a representative during the Nintendo Investor Relations' Q&A if the console is replacing the 3DS. The rep reportedly answered that the company is still considering releasing a separate 3DS successor at a later date.*
Nintendo might have been merely trying to cover all the bases. By saying the Switch is not a direct 3DS successor, the company can release one without losing face if the hybrid ends up flopping like the Wii U. But it could also be seriously considering a new standalone handheld console, which is fantastic news for those immune to the hybrid's charms.
*Update: This article stated earlier that the rep said Nintendo has plans to release a 3DS successor. However, Engadget's Japan Editor (Mat Smith) said his answer's exact translation is "We're still considering a separate successor to the 3DS." We can't confirm the identity of Reddit's source, however, and Nintendo still hasn't gotten back to us with more details about the console, so take this with a grain of salt.

Apple lawsuit reveals most chargers sold on Amazon are fake

Don't get tempted by the lower prices.

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Mobile Star LLC for manufacturing fake Apple chargers and cables and passing them off on Amazon as authentic goods. According to the details of the lawsuit posted by Patently Apple, Cupertino bought and tested over 100 Lightning cables and chargers marked "Fulfilled by Amazon" over the past nine months. The result? Around 90 percent of the chargers were fake. Now, we all know there's an abundance of counterfeit Apple goods out there, but people tend to trust listings sold by Amazon itself. And in this case, Amazon clearly stated that the items were "original." Check out one example below the fold to see what we mean.
When Apple got in touch with Amazon about the issue, the website told the former that it got most of its chargers from Mobile Star LLC. The iPhone-maker stressed that since counterfeit cables and chargers don't go through consumer safety testing and could be poorly designed, they're prone to overheating and catching fire. They might even electrocute users. Tim Cook and co. are now asking the court to issue an injunction against the defendant. They also want the court to order the seizure and destruction of all the fake chargers in addition to asking for damages.
As for Amazon, it told 9to5mac that it "has zero tolerance for the sale of counterfeits on [its] site" and the the company "work[s] closely with manufacturers and brands, and pursue wrongdoers aggressively."

Reliance JioFi Plans, Price, How to Buy, and Everything You Need to Know

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Anyone can buy a Reliance Jio JioFi
  • It is priced at Rs. 1,999
  • It's a great way of getting started with Jio without a VoLTE phone
Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard by now about Reliance Jio and want to know if
getting on the network is worth it. Reliance is giving away free SIM cards to everyone with unlimited
free usage of the network until December 31, and unlimited use of Jio's different services, which
include news, music, and video on demand. However, your phone may not be compatible with the
network and one device that could help bring your whole house online is the Reliance Jio JioFi.
Given how cheap calling is in India, the reason most people are interested in Jio right now is to access
free, fast, and unlimited data. As of now, mobile data in India is still pretty expensive - for example, a
1GB pack in Karnataka from Vodafone will set you back by Rs. 265. Reliance Jio has changed all that
with data as low as Rs. 25 per GB.
As we write this before everyone gets access to the Reliance Jio network from Monday, the speeds are
great and there are no FUPs. Consuming 10GB of mobile data on another network would be
inconceivable, but many people are consuming that much in a single day with Jio, and that's likely to
continue at least during the preview offer.
Many people are just getting a Jio SIM and then switching on the Wi-Fi hotspot on their phones. The
problem with this is that it drains the phone's battery, and thus limits the usefulness. That's where the
JioFi comes into the picture.

What is Reliance Jio JioFi
The JioFi is a personal hotspot - the kind of thing you've seen some all mobile carriers.
The Reliance JioFi is a small device that will fit into your pocket, and acts as a bridge between the 4G network and a local Wi-Fi network that it creates, which your phone,
laptop, and other devices can connect to. It's a very simple way of getting your home
online, and it comes with a rechargable battery - that means that you can plug it in at
home, or put it in your pocket and take your connection with you when you head
out.

Interestingly, you can use the Jio Join app on your phone to place calls or send messages
through the JioFi. This means that even if your phone does not support 4G, you can make
full use of Reliance Jio's network thanks to the JioFi.
The Reliance JioFi comes with a Reliance Jio SIM that, once activated, can be used to
connect to the network. You can of course use SIM cards of other operators in the JioFi if
needed, though obviously you will need to pay for usage on that network.
How to buy a Reliance JioFi?
Just walk into the nearest Reliance Digital/ Reliance Digital Xpress Mini store and purchase
a JioFi. You'll need to carry a passport photo, one photo ID, and an address proof. Once you
fill out the
forms the number will be activated, and you'll have to call 180089011977 for televerification -
the exact steps
are given on the package and it's pretty straightforward.
The store executives say that the process should happen within four hours, though in our
experience with getting two Reliance Jio connections activated, it took more than a day each
time.
Reliance JioFi Price and tariff plans
The JioFi is priced at Rs. 1,999, down from its earlier price of Rs. 2,899 and data is free to
use until December 31. As of now, the company has made no statement about what the
plans will be post that date, though they are likely to be similar, if not better, than what's
being offered to other Jio SIM card holders.
That's all you need to know in order to get a Reliance Jio JioFi. Stay tuned for a detailed
review of the JioFi and Reliance Jio network.

How to Get Reliance Jio Sim Without Lyf Phone

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Reliance Jio is still offering free SIMs to 'test' its network
  • Commercial launch is a few months away, says Mukesh Ambani
  • Users get free access for 3 months, maybe longer if the launch is delayed
Reliance Jio is still not at the point of a commercial rollout, so it's too early to say what the actual
user experience will be like on the network. Even the actual pricing has to be announced - as of now,
not much is clear really about the network. But you can sign up for Jio and enjoy high-speed
connectivity without paying a paisa, and free hai to acha hai, right? That's right, each Reliance Jio
SIM comes with at least three months of free, unlimited data usage, voice calls, SMS, and access to
Jio services like JioOnDemand.
The commercial rollout of Jio will no doubt affect speeds, network availability, and could lead to
call drops as well - while other networks, which stand to lose customers in the process, might actually
see some improvement in their services. That's all hypothetical though - but for now, we are really
enjoying using our Jio account, and would recommend that you try and get one too.
There are a few different ways in which you can get a Reliance Jio SIM. The network works on 4G,
and uses VoLTE for calls, but the latter is not available on old phones. There is an app called JioJoin
that Reliance offers which works around this through VoIP calling, in case your phone doesn't support
VoLTE, so it isn't a very big problem. The easiest way to get your hands a Reliance Jio SIM is to buy a
 Lyf phone by Reliance Retail.

Reliance Retail's Lyf range of phones hasn't been getting the most spectacular reviews, but it's the
easiest way to get a new Reliance Jio SIM right now. Just walk into a Reliance Digital Store, ask for
a new Lyf phone, and you're live on Reliance Jio. You can get a phone for as little as Rs. 3,000, and
you'll get three months of free, unlimited Internet access and calling along with it.

We can inform you that buying a phone like this, turning on the Wi-Fi hotspot, and using 4G
to power your entire home's Internet access, works just fine, and the speed and reliability
(at the moment) is better than most broadband connections at home.
This gives you free, unlimited data, calling, and access to all of Reliance Jio's apps for three
months, or until the commercial launch of Reliance Jio, whichever is later. But if you don't
want to carry around an extra handset everywhere you go, or don't want to buy another
phone just to get a Reliance Jio SIM there are other options.
If you have a 4G compatible phone, you can get started with Jio, here's what you need to do
to get a Reliance Jio SIM:
1) Make friends with someone working for Reliance
The easiest way to get a Jio SIM is to know someone who works with Reliance. The company
allows employees to refer a certain number of people to get Jio SIMs that can be used in your
phone. Most Reliance employees are probably used to getting friend requests on Facebook
from people that just want a SIM, so you might want to try one of the other methods instead.
2) The Reliance Jio SIM Preview offer
The partner offer is the easiest way of getting a Reliance Jio SIM if you have any of the eligible
phones. As of writing this report, the Jio Preview offer has been extended to smartphones by

Just follow these steps on a qualifying smartphone:
  1. Download & Open MyJio App from Play Store
  2. Tap on Get Jio SIM on the Banner
  3. Tap on Agree & Get Jio offer
  4. Select your location from the drop down
  5. Read through the steps and click on Next
  6. Offer Code can be viewed on the screen. Note down your offer code.
Once that's done, you will get a bar code that you need to take to a Reliance Digital where
you have to show your phone and you'll get a SIM. Remember to carry a photograph for the
form, and your photo ID, and the staff will do the rest. Quick tip: in our experience - and what
many other people online are also telling us - the Reliance Digital Xpress Mini Stores are
much more efficient about this process than the larger Reliance Digital stores.
Note that though only a few phones qualify for the Reliance Jio SIM under this offer, you can
still use this SIM on other phones if you want.
3) Get a JioFi Portable Wi-Fi hotspot
Jio is also keen to go after users at home, taking on broadband providers and not just other
phone networks. One of the easiest ways to get a Reliance Jio SIM is to get the JioFi router.
Launched first for HP customers, anyone can now get the JioFi router, with three months of
free 4G data, although you have to pay Rs. 2,899 for the wireless compact router. That still
works out to less than Rs. 1,000 a month for free, unlimited, fast data, so it's a pretty good
deal considering that unfair FUPs are the norm on all other networks.

The JioFi is a small Mi-Fi device that can create a Wi-Fi zone that up to 31 devices can
connect to SIMultaneously; great for taking your phone, laptop, and tablet online all at once.
It takes three hours to charge, and can be used to broadcast a signal for six hours on battery,
so you can use it at home or on the go. To buy the router, you just need to get it from a
Reliance Digital store. You'll need the same documents you need for a SIM card, and you'll
have to televerify in the same manner, but then you're up and running.
4) Ask nicely at your local Reliance Digital
Owners of any 4G smartphone can walk in to select Reliance Digital and Xpress Mini stores
and get their hands on a Reliance Jio SIM, complete with the Jio Preview offer. The catch is
that the offer is only available in select outlets, which can offer Jio SIM cards to customers at
their discretion. You can try asking nicely at your local outlet... and if that doesn't work, try at
a few other stores as well until someone feels bad and gives you the SIM.
All these methods can help you get a Jio connection right away, before the actual consumer
launch in the "coming months". Have you got a Reliance Jio SIM? What's your experience
been like? Tell us via the comments.
